Panopticon Research
Panopticon Research
What had never changed in school at 12 years from primary to high school it was the structure. I have often thought about the architectural structure of Korean schools. I went to schools that are typically ‘ㄷ’ structures, surrounded by various buildings around the main playground. I thought this structure was similar to the Panopticon structure, so I researched the Panopticon structure.
There have been many changes in society to make up for this problem. Typically, the school wall was torn down, but there were pros and cons. The downside is that the students suffered a lot of damage due to crimes committed by outsiders in the school. The advantage is that the wall that was blocking was gone, and the frustration was gone. However, there was a situation in which the school, which had eliminated the wall due to its shortcomings, was set up again. I designed not a formal wall a new wall that can protect students’ safety and highlight their strengths and experimented with various materials.
I tried to model the structure of the high school I actually attended and rearrange it into a new one. The school that I wanted as a student is a new type of school, divide into low buildings, with playgrounds of various sizes and small forests, a space to escape the protection of teachers for a while, and a space for students’ creativity and rich imagination.

It is hard to find such a problem in the new school.
Over the years, many changes in building laws and curricula have led to many schools with different structures.
However, the problem is that the structure of the school that was built before does not improve at all. Breaking the fixed number of classrooms, locations, use, etc. will improve the problem. The simple form of the school represents the effect of locking up students’ thoughts by being complicated by architectural laws and curricula. Empty spaces (classrooms) are beginning to emerge in the generation where population numbers are decreasing and there are more diverse activities than individual activities. I hope that these spaces will be used as much as possible to help students share their thoughts and engage in various activities without conditions. It is to change the old space to fit the times.
